Project Description
PCL brought to the table our expertise in historic renovations and seismic retrofits to restore the Vibiana Arts building to its former glory. "The Vibiana Arts Hazard Mitigation project is the first phase in the restoration of the second oldest building in the City of Los Angeles. Boarded-up since the Northridge earthquake, the historic old St. Vibiana's Cathedral will be seismically retrofitted in preparation for a full restoration for use as an Arts Center for the Cal State University system. The first phase of the project includes the selective demolition of non-historic items and the protection of the existing historical elements throughout the cathedral; the construction of new footings and concrete shear walls to stabilize the structure; the repair of the unreinforced masonry walls and the plaster that covers them; the replacement of the old roofs; the strengthening of the wood framing throughout the building; the pinning and cleaning of the building's limestone facade; and the refurbishment of the numerous windows around the building. The eight-month project seeks to make the condemmed structure safe to occupy once again." Southern California Development Forum 2005 Honorable Mention Award
