Project Description

The UC Irvine facility will make it possible to develop integrated nanosystems instrumentation, in turn, to enable genomic and proteomic research.  It will also facilitate micro/nano fabrication technologies for seamless integration of nano-materials and nano-engineering devices with the macro-physical world.  It will also enable research and development related to nano-bio-info-electronics, nano-computing, and telecom-system-on-a-chip.

The building includes 120,000 gross square feet of "wet" and "dry" research labs, specialized research laboratories, offices, conference rooms, administrative space and public facilities.  The four story structure is separated into two wings joined by a full height atrium/lobby.  The larger of the two wings will house the majority of the labs with levels 1 & 2 classified as H-8 occupancy.  Level 1 will include approximately 12,000 square feet of Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 clean rooms for nanoscale fabrication labs w ith an additional 11,000 square feet of support space.  This area is connected to the existing Engineering Gateway Building so that these two facilities can function together.  The second level consists of 23,000 square feet of "dry" laboratories that are roughed-in for future user conversion to "wet" laboratories and associated office space.  Levels three and four include approximately 46,000 squa re feet of dry laboratory space designed in a flexible manner to facilitate reconfiguration to accommodate changes in research and technology .

The smaller wing includes a state-of-the-art lecture hall for up to 80 people equipped with leading edge communications systems to enable interaction between institute personnel and researchers worldwide.  The second level includes a media arts studio and lab/offices on the upper two floors.

The full height atrium/lobby connects the two wings together but also displays the vision of Cal-(IT)2  by acting as a gathering space for functions and being an interactive hub with the sister facility that is located on the campus of UC San Diego.
