Project Description
Architectural and Seismic Renovation The Grauman's Chinese Theatre was obtained through a negotiated scope of work with the Architect and Owner. The project consists of structural and architectural renovation to the interior and exterior of the 1927 theatre. Grauman's Chinese was first constructed in 1927 with a follow on upgrade to transform the theatre into a movie house in 1958. PCL under took the renovation of seismic upgrade with the addition of a cast-in-place shearwall within the theatre and a shotcrete shearwall behind the movie screen in the fly tower. The shearwalls have been connected through strengthening the roof truss using steel angles and a sloping tube steel truss. The existing projection room, located on the main theatre floor, was relocated back into its original position in the balcony. The theatre floor was reseated and handicapped seating areas were added. A new enlarged concession stand was added in the main entrance to the lobby. The exterior fore court, famous for the hand and footprints of Hollywood Stars, was spruced up to match the original 1927 look. Blade signs and movie cases to match the original look were installed, and the canopy and box office that were added in the 1950's were removed. With a new coat of paint, the glitter will spread on Hollywood Boulevard again.
