Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Expansion

The Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is a landmark in Saint Paul's Highland neighborhood. Its white steeple soars above the red brick, colonial-style facade. As a self-performing construction manager, PCL built a 17,700 sf addition to the original 1950 building. This addition houses new classrooms, a vaulted gathering hall and a new accessible entry for the church. PCL matched the existing brick facade and detailing. A structural steel gabled roof with dormers is supported by CMU bearing walls. The poured concrete foundation is two-feet thick and complicated with several light wells and bay windows. PCL also renovated major portions of the existing 48,000 sf church. The kitchen was completely renovated to a new commercial grade facility and was turned over to the congregation in three months as promised. In addition, the mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded and sprinklers threaded through the lower level. The building remained fully occupied during construction. Church activities included Sunday services, weekday morning nursery school, weekend weddings, and occasional weekday funerals.
