Project Description
The acoustically critical Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts Project is the latest addition to the University of Denver's main, south Denver Campus. This 181,300 GSF, multi-phased project consists of 15 1/2" CIP slabs, 8"- 24" CIP concrete walls, load bearing masonry, upper-level structural steel and pre-cast roof slabs. There are actually six isolated chambers under the single, copper roof. These chambers are isolated by 2" and 4" acoustical isolation joints to eliminate sound and vibration transfer from one chamber to another. The building's exterior is clad in a sandstone and limestone veneer and is accented by two 24-foot tall, hand carved limestone sculptures that flank the north elevation. The first phase houses the Lamont School of Music, including over 60 practice studios, a digital recording studio, a 4,000 square-foot music library, music classrooms, a Jazz rehearsal chamber, an Opera rehearsal chamber, an Orchestra rehearsal chamber and a Piano/Chorale Recital Hall. The second phase houses the Flexible Theatre, the Commons/Galleria areas and the centerpiece performance complex known as June Swaner Gates Hall. Interior finishes include imported Italian travertine floors, limestone accents, 24-carat gold leafed column capitals and chandeliers, hardwood maple flooring, oak and mahogany wood trim, and bronze handrails. A separate, four-level, 155,000 GSF parking structure that sits adjacent to the performing arts building is also clad with limestone and copper veneer.
