Project Description
Denver's Municipal Auditorium building originally opened in 1907 as the largest auditorium and conference venue west of the Mississippi River. During the 1950's and 1960's, Mayor Quigg Newton renovated the auditorium by converting it to a performance venue and renamed it the Newton Denver Municipal Auditorium Theatre. Little had changed in the decades since and the facility was in need of both aesthetic and life-safety upgrades. Through the RFP and Preconstruction Services process, the City selected PCL to perform complete renovation of the interior, while leaving the historic exterior in-tact. Renovation began with complete abatement and demolition of the building's interior (excluding seven sets of paired columns that support seven full-span roof trusses and portions of the roof itself). Upon completion of these scopes, the excavation will take place and construction will move vertically – inside the existing, historic exterior that remains. Upon completion in June 2005, PCL will have transformed the building into a 221,000 GSF, 2400-seat, world class opera house that will serve as the flag-ship facility of downtown Denver's Performing Arts Complex.
