Project Description

The Miami MetroZoo's Hidden Treasures of Tropical America expansion is a 28-acre area development that includes nine buildings, seven large exhibits, four viewing pavilions and three aviaries that showcase Central and South American plants and animals in a replica of their natural habitat.  Four major exhibit areas include Cloud Forest, Amazonia, Mata Atlantica and a Village Plaza, complete with life support system for the exhibits.  Also included are guest support facilities and a food and gift pavilion.

Amazonia includes a 48,000 gallon fish tank and other tanks displaying electric eels, and more snake, frog, lizard and spider species.  There is also an outdoor 1,000 gallon stingray touch tank, a crocodile holding and viewing area, anaconda exhibit and anaconda children's play area.

The Mata Atlantica section features the giant river otter exhibit and holding area, an anteater exhibit and play area, a harpy eagle and cock of the rock aviary, along with a bat exhibit and display tanks holding more frog species, snakes, turtles, possums and scorpions.

The Village Plaza is a large hardscape plaza with a food and gift pavilion, a stage and a large water feature play area.

The project site includes exotic flora and fauna features, watering and feeding systems, fogging systems and water filtration and purification systems.  Exhibits utilize graphics, audio/visual components, sculptures and artifacts for an interpretive and educational guest experience.
